Butterfly Farm Aruba: A Magical World

concept/writing by Eileen M. editing/writing by Gina L.

Aruba Trip Tips just came back from a Great vacation in Aruba..!!! This year we did a very interesting and fun family event. We went to The Butterfly Farm–what a lovely place and very informative. The farm is nestled between the Eagle Beach & Palm Beach areas of Aruba. butterfly3 butterfly4We were surrounded by these beautiful creatures enjoying the freedom of this natural and safe habitat. It was an otherworldly experience as we realized we were in their domain. There is a short 15 minute tour available, where we were shown the chrysalis room and learned about the butterfly’s life cycle. We also learned the names of the many breeds that live at this butterfly conservatory. butterfly1These beautiful creatures aren’t as weak and delicate as one might think they are. We now have an even greater respect for them and enjoy their beauty in a whole new way!!!! For more information pls check their website: www.thebutterflyfarm.com butterfly-dinnertime butterfly2 An opportunity to see beautiful Monarchs, Blue Morphos and other species up close, you will be amazed how these magical creatures perform their transformation from caterpillar to aviator. Feeding time was an exciting scene when all different types of butterflies came together to feast on the divine sweet nectar of the tropical fruits placed out for them. To learn about all the different butterflies that live at the butterfly farm you can read this wonderfully informative page at their website: www.thebutterflyfarm.com/our-butterflies Never knew there were so many beautiful variations in the Lepidoptera family–scientific name for butterfiles. We learned that on our visit and we highly recommend it as a fun family outing in Aruba.

Review by Christina & Salvatore Canzoneri, August 2015

Paname French Restaurant on 56th St & Lex. is a lovely French Bistro, it is in a word is a delightful…

We were met by our lovely host the amazing chef/owner Bernard Ros. Chef paname-chef-rosRos, who’s owned a number of restaurants in NYC over the past 40 years, is an engaging and enjoyable host. While we were there he would routinely stop at tables to chat with his guests treating each as if they were old friends.  And that as much as the simple, inviting decor, with a hint of Art Deco in the wall hangings gives Paname an air of casual coziness that defines what a bistro should be about.

As the evening progressed the lights were lowered to match the fading daylight and the room glowed warmly as the lovely meal progressed. The ambiance was gentle, soothing a quiet murmur of diner’s conversations was complimented by a romantic European soundtrack of timeless love songs which was truly sensual and hip.

Wine: Chilean Chardonnay, Cabernet

paname-wine1

Without a wine list I felt a bit vulnerable trusting Julia, our server to select a Chardonnay to please my finicky expectations. She nailed it! The Chard was smooth & buttery….the way I like it. My husband was equally pleased with the smoky Cabernet that was selected for him and we were both two glasses pleased.

Our Prixe Fixe meal was $38 per person and tasted more like it should have cost closer to $100 for that we were treated to ——–

paname-amuse-bouche
A savory morsel to awaken the palate.

Amuse Bouche : Porcini Mushrooms & Avocado Pate w 2 Sauces

Appetizer:

panamenyc-escargot
Delicious twist on a classic French dish.

Escargot in Baby Potatoes with Garlic Butter

panamenyc-crabcake-remoulade
Golden and crisp with the perfect remoulade.
paname-remiseenbouche
A refreshing surprise with a hint of spice.

Remise en bouche: Watermelon with Feta Cheese & Pine Nuts

Main Course:

paname-fish
Delicate and moist! Crisp Pistachio Nuts add texture.

Filet of Sole with Citrus Vervaine and Pistachio Nuts, Bergamot Oil

paname_steak
Juicy and perfectly seared shell steak.

New York Shell Steak with Shallots and Sauce Bordelaise

Dessert:

paname-chocolate-volcano
Hot espresso is poured over to form a soup. Incredible!

Chocolate Volcano

paname-apple-tarte
Spun sugar basket with fresh creme and berries atop.

Apple Tarte

Finale:

paname-dessert
Captures the violets of Toulouse. The sweet evening in a glass.

Violette Sorbet & Passion Fruit Champagne

And the food is simply: delicate & delicious. Paname’s menu is nicely-sized so as not to overwhelm and is generously balanced with food that appeals to your eyes as well as your taste and preferences. Chef Ros told us that his goal is to serve good food at a price that people not on expense accounts can afford and he succeeds brilliantly.

It seems that Chef Ros keeps his costs, and his guests’ dinner cheques, down by shopping for all his food himself, instead of having a food purveyor bring the food to him, which has the added bonus of allowing him to select high quality ingredients himself, and by running his restaurant himself not relying on a large staff. Which doesn’t mean that we were served by harried and overworked staff. In truth our server, Julie, the only one on duty that night we were there, was both friendly and attentive to our needs.

paname-meWe HIGHLY recommend Paname NYC as the perfect dining experience for a date night, family gathering or intimate celebration.

The meal made you excited to be in the moment with someone dear to you, by your side, sharing this delightful repast. Thank you Chef Ros, you truly know how to bring joy to your guests through your delightful culinary creations.

(We were given this meal in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are 100% our own.)

Labor Day Getaway Weekend Winners

Labor Day Getaway Weekend Winners

by The Aruba Trip Tips Team:

I don’t know about you but for me the more we travel the faster time flies. Not a big physics buff but my hubby loves to tell me the opposite about Einstein & relativity, how the faster you travel the slower time goes….either way it’s essential to travel in a well-appointed style. The better quality your gear is the more comfortable the trip and that doesn’t necessarily mean expensive.

We love well made travel gear and smart fabrics that make packing for your Labor Day weekend escape a breeze. Afterall, your trying to take a break from all the extra work–right?

1) André Lorent  Daily Rehydrating Sunscreen 30+ SPF

DAY 1: Headed out to Crab Meadow  Beach on the North Shore of Long Island.  Sat in the noonday sun and applied André Lorent and can truly say I Loved the feel! Silky, blends in quickly and leaves your skin feeling smooth and moisturized. I tanned beautifully and in style with André Lorent. Skin where I  had not applied André Lorent had a slight redness.

The real test will be on Day 2 in ARUBA!

DAY 2: Aruba, as you may already know, has the most sunniest day of all islands in the Caribbean. It is approx. 863 miles away from the equator and lies between the Tropic of Cancer & Capricorn– serious sunshine, all day every day.  We arrived at Palm Beach and were immediately told by the beach attendant to use sunblock. We  generously applied André Lorent  on our body–it was quickly absorbed by our skin while leaving it feeling soft and moisturized.   The product gives such a light feeling that you will wonder if you are protected. For comparison purposes we also applied an economy brand 70SPF on our faces—it felt heavy & greasy,  fairly uncomfortable to use.  After an hour under a palm tree we put Andre Lorent through the paces. We entered the Aruba waters without reapplying sunblock and swam for one hour. Back at out chairs we reapplied and then spent another hour walking the beach walk. In our hotel room we realized how nicely we had tanned without burning—but our faces had a rosy glow indicating the start of a burn. André Lorent at 30SPF was far more effective than the “no-frills” national chain brand at 70SPF in addition to it’s light, comfortable feel. For sunbathers who truly want the very best quality in skin protection from the sun UVA/UVB rays choose André Lorent Sunscreen.

Available on Amazon.com

2) White Mark Floral Skater Dress
Cute & flirty this beauty defines our POV of the perfect summer day dress. The lightweight fabric is oh-so-comfy and it packs beautifully.
Pair it with a perfect pair of summer flats and you will look amazing.
You’ll want one in every color–also comes in blue.

Available on Overstock.com

3) NW Travel Gear RFID Travel Wallet/Passport Holder

An efficient and functional case–stores flat, lightweight yet sturdy with many handy compartments. We counted 8 pockets in total for phone, passport, credit cards, cash…includes a carabiner clip for keys. Durable polyester exterior with PVC window which nicely held his monthly train pass for the Long Island Rail Road. What’s cool is you don’t have worry about which luggage pockets have all you important documents–wallet stays around your neck when you run for the gate to make that flight. Not sure how to test the RFID feature but it was nice to know it’s there! Found my husband taking the wallet everywhere to carry his valuables on a recent trip to Aruba–highly reccommended.
Available at Amazon.com

4) ESky Electronic Luggage Scale

My wife and I bought this nifty little Luggage scale because we grew tired of inaccurately weighing our luggage on the bathroom scale before every trip.  Now with this great new luggage scale designed specifically for this very purpose it takes only a few seconds to get a reliable read out on a easy to view LCD display. It’s light, portable and convenient and has helped with determining if your suitcase is over the weight limit. Who wants to be charged extra at the airport for one too many souvenirs? Available at Amazon.com

5) Camo  Zeppo Duffle Bag

Besides looking the picture of cool and hip at the airport we really appreciate the deep capacity of the oh so chic oversize duffle. What’s also very interesting is it’s made completely of recycled materials–very hip indeed! Perfect for a long, holiday getaway. Available at Tigerbear Republik

Dietary Choices: Vegan, Vegetarian & Gluten-Free Dining in Aruba

Dietary Choices: Vegan, Vegetarian & Gluten-Free Dining in Aruba

Healthy is the new SEXY!

As a six day a week vegetarian I’m always thinking ahead, hoping I’ll healthyfind an abundance of healthy choices at my travel destination. Sometimes I luck out and find a feast of fruits and vegetables and sometimes if I’m just barely lucky it’s a convenience store banana. I can’t say it stresses me out, but it tends to be the last thing I consider as I zip my luggage shut and dash to the airport. After impatiently counting off the days, all I want to do is just relax and stop thinking about what to bring, what to wear, which places to go to, what the currency is and so on..I think you get the idea!

The beauty of Aruba is that there are restaurants to cater every dietary need, be it vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and even the “steak connoisseur.” pizzaIt’s great to be adventurous and try the local cuisine or experiment with foods you’ve never heard of before, but some of us need to find a little bit of home when we travel. Here in Aruba we’ve got you covered and not just blah! versions of meat-free dishes—we’re talking truly gourmet selections. The atmosphere is also your choice, whether you want casual in flip-flops or trendy upscale, it’s truly up to you.

In the past, the options for vegetarianism and beyond seemed pretty limited. We’re becoming enlightened as a species and realizing many truths in these Aquarian times–our footprint and legacy does matter. We’ve learned that the way we treat ourselves, the animals and our planet has repercussions. In a recent Anthony Bourdain episode on another island paradise, Hawaii, residents of Molokai spoke of ‘AINA—the love and respect for Mother Earth as a source of all beauty and health. hawaiiI see a similar spirit in Aruba—love of the sea and the land that is their wellspring of abundance. Protection of animals and choices to minimize harm—to self, to other creatures, to home….it’s always a joy to find liked-minded souls in my travels.

I traveled recently to Aruba with a family member who is a “carnivore” with dietary needs. Our first night on the island, I was exhausted after the flight and was content to have a granola bar in my hotel room and pass out. He would have nothing of it and dragged me to local steak establishment—enter the lion’s den…lol! Politely I suppressed the voice inside me yelling “there’s nothing here for me to eat!” The restaurant was cool, welcoming and beautifully lit—but I was still skeptical. As I entered, to my surprise, I was met but the biggest bounty of healthful, vegetarian dishes in a vast salad bar ringing the center of the room!—I’d hit the “mother lode” !

TexasDeBrazil

I was surrounded by a beautiful array of spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, tofu, hearts of palm, rice dishes, yucca and all the blessings of the earth in a cool, inviting celebration!

The chill air, the beautiful colors of the heavenly food …I was refreshed, I was in Aruba!

And I can say wholeheartedly that Aruba gets it! Healthy is the new SEXY here!

My advice to everyone who reads this article and views the list of restaurants below is to contact the restaurants directly ahead of your trip to see what they have to offer, their price range and proximity in which they are located from your hotel.
